Below are some Frequently Asked Questions of Parents and Students who are new to Music Classes at the Secondary Level:
MPA stands for "Music Performance Assessment." This is an annual event that happens for both Band and Orchestra, in which students perform for a rating - Think of it like our Final Exam for music!
Solo & Ensemble (S&E) is an adjudicated event that Band and Orchestra students may participate in each year in February. Students may perform either a solo work for their instrument, or a small ensemble (duets, trios, etc.).
This is exciting news, and we would love to have them join the BSMS Music Family! Please visit our Future Members Page for more information about Band, Orchestra, or Guitar, or you may contact one of the Directors!
Additionally, make sure that your student is registered for the correct music class with the School Office so that they are in the correct class right from Day One!
Unfortunately, the State of Florida and the HCPS District do not fund any programs in full. Our fundraising and the Student Dues cover the remaining amount that it takes to offer the experiences that are expected in our organization. Student Dues do not cover the entirety of our operating costs. We must fundraise throughout the year in addition.
Parents may send in cash or checks (made out to Beth Shields Music Booster Association) in a sealed envelope with their students and drop them in the money box by the Director's Office. Please be sure that the envelope is sealed, and has written on the outside:
Student's Full Name, Grade Level, and Class Period
Amount Enclosed
Parents may also pay online. Details can be found on our CutTime and Fees Page.
This depends on the instrument. Students are HIGHLY encouraged to rent their instruments from Music & Arts, our local music store. This is the best value for a rental, and it offers a path to ownership with the Rent-to-Own program. More expensive instruments can be rented through the school for a nominal fee that covers annual maintenance.
Please note, NO CHILD will be left behind because they can't afford an instrument. WE WILL DO EVERYTHING IN OUR POWER TO HELP YOU! Please do not hesitate to contact us for more information!

YES!
We have students who in a music class who are also in just about every club, sport, and/or organization on and off campus.
While our classes are co-curricular, meaning that there are activities that occur outside of the school day that are mandatory and graded, students have always been successful in both their music class and other extra-curricular activities.
We plan events far in advance so families have time to coordinate. Please make sure to check our calendar regularly for updates!
